Furria (/ˈfɝrɪ:ɑ/), officially the Republic of Furria, is an island country in Melanesia, part of Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean about 1,100 nautical miles (2,000 km; 1,300 mi) northeast of New Zealand's North Island. Its closest neighbours are Vanuatu to the west, New Caledonia to the southwest, New Zealand's Kermadec Islands to the southeast, Tonga to the east, the Samoas and France's Wallis and Futuna to the northeast, and Tuvalu to the north. Furria consists of an archipelago of more than 330 islands— of which four are permanently inhabited— and more than 500 islets, amounting to a total land area of about 18,300 square kilometres (7,100 sq mi). The two major islands, Furfal Island and Sona Island, account for 95% of the total population of 3.8 million. The capital, Owo City, on Furfal Island, serves as the country's principal transport hub. About three-quarters of Furrians live on Furfal Island's coasts, either in Owo City or in larger urban centres such as Uwusby—where tourism is the major local industry— or Furcon, where the sugar-cane industry is paramount.

The majority of Furria's islands formed through volcanic activity starting around 150 million years ago. Some geothermal activity still occurs today, on the islands of Sona and Degenera. The geothermal systems on Furfal are non-volcanic in origin, with low-temperature (c. 35–60 degrees Celsius) surface discharges, with the Strawberry Hot Springs near Uwusby serving as a good example.

Humans have lived on Furria since the second millennium BC- first Austronesians and later Melanesians, with some Polynesian influences. The island became uninhabited due a local extinction of the human population on the island sometime around the 5th century. The island remained uninhabited, claimed by the government of New Zealand, until the Furry Republic Movement, an organization of members of the furry fandom, purchased the island and created a new haven for members of the fandom by declaring independence. The current Constitution of the island was implemented by Movement leaders on January 7, 2019 with the first elections held in December 2019.

As of 2019, 156 members of the United Nations, including all five nations with permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, recognize the sovereignty of the nation. Due to its permanent government, population, defined borders, and recognition by a majority of UN members, Furria is considered by most governments to be a legitimate nation. Furria's official foundation on January 7, 2019 with the ratification of its new Constitution, makes it the youngest country in the world.

Furria has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific, mainly to its robust service economy in addition to abundant forest, mineral, and fish resources. Its currency is the Uwullar, and its main sources of foreign exchange are its tourist and hospitality industry, offshore finance services, remittances from Furrians working abroad, and exports of foodstuffs and raw materials. The Ministry of the Interior supervises Furria's local government, which takes the form of city and town councils organized into provinces.

Etymology

The name 'Furria' was established with the ratification of the nation's Constitution on January 7, 2019. Clause I of the Furrian Constitution states that, among other things, "This nation's name shall hereby be declared as 'The Republic of Furria'." The name refers to the island's population, members of the furry fandom, who populated the island shortly after it was purchased by the Furry Republic Movement, an organization of furries whose purpose was to purchase territory and declare it a sovereign nation, thus creating a safe haven for furries around the world. 'Furria' has been used to refer to the country since its declaration, though prior to the ratification of the Constitution, such names as 'Furtopia' and 'Flusion' were used. The nation can also be called the 'Furry Republic'.

Geography

Furria covers a total area of some 194,000 square kilometres (75,000 sq mi) of which around 10% is land.

Furria is the hub of the Southwest Pacific, midway between Vanuatu and Tonga. The archipelago is located between 176° 53′ east and 178° 12′ west. The 180° meridian runs through Furcon but the International Date Line is bent to give uniform time (UTC+12) to the whole of the Furria island group. With the exception of Rejecia, the Furria island group lies between 15° 42′ and 20° 02′ south. Rejecia is located 220 nautical miles (410 km; 250 mi) north of the group, 360 nautical miles (670 km; 410 mi) from Owo City, 12° 30′ south of the equator.

Furria consists of 332 islands (of which 26 are inhabited) and 522 smaller islets. The two most important islands are Furfal and Sona Island, which account for about three-quarters of the total land area of the country. The islands are mountainous, with peaks up to 1,324 metres (4,341 ft), and covered with thick tropical forests or grassy plains.

The highest point is Mount Buldge on Furfal Island. Furfal Island hosts the Furrian capital of Anthroport, and is home to nearly three-quarters of the population. Other important towns include Uwusby (the location of the international airport), and Furcon, Furria second city with large sugar cane mills and a seaport.

The main towns on Sona Island are Trixton and Azyla Town. Other islands and island groups include Furcon and Degenera (the third and fourth largest islands, respectively), the Animus Group, and the Dragon Islands, both of which are popular tourist destinations. Rejecia, some 270 nautical miles (500 km; 310 mi) north of the archipelago, has a special administrative status in Furria.
