The Gáe Dearg torpedo is the heavyweight torpedo used by the submarines of the Royal Ossorian Navy. It is capable of wire guidance and autonomous acoustic homing in both active and passive modes, and is capable of both anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface ship (ASuW) use. Development of the Gáe Dearg began in the mid-1970s, with production starting in 1988, and deployment in 1992. By 2004, they had completely replaced the older Tigerfish torpedo. It is one of the fastest torpedoes currently in operation in Tyran. The torpedo's name is taken from a magical spear in Ossorian mythology which was said to leave wounds that could not be healed.

Specifications

The Gáe Dearg torpedo has a length of 7 meters, a diameter of 533 millimeters, and a 300 kg PBX warhead. The torpedo is driven by a pump-jet powered by a gas turbine engine using Otto fuel II and hydroxyl ammonium perchlorate (HAP) as an oxidizer. The Gáe Dearg, which is capable of traveling at 80 knots, were designed to catch high-speed submarine and surface threats with minimal chance to engage countermeasures.

A microprocessor enables the torpedo to make autonomous tactical decisions during the prosecution of its attack. It has a powerful blast warhead, triggered either by a contact detonator for use against the hull of a submarine or surface target, or an acoustic proximity fuse for under-keel detonations against surface targets.
