Gauteng Defence Force

The Gauteng Defence Force (GDF) is the military of the Hesperidesian Kingdom of Gautenga, which consists of about 2,000 personnel and is tasked with maintaining internal security, territorial integrity, and defending the Gauteng people. In practice the country's external defence is guaranteed by the Blackhelm Confederacy, so the armed forces are mainly used for internal security. The GDF is an army with a small air wing.

History

The current Gauteng Defense Force traces its roots back to the armed Gauteng militias formed during the Hesperidesian Revolutions, which were established to protect traditional Gauteng lands from incursions by neighboring rebel groups.

Since the independence of Gautenga in 1988, the Gauteng Defense Forces have been called to alert repeatedly to defend Gauteng territorial integrity due to the ongoing border disputes with neighboring Jafala and Kwalawi. On May 7, 1995, 2 members of the Gauteng Defense Forces were killed and several others were wounded due to an armed dispute with Jafalan troops over grazing rights. Open warfare was only narrowly avoided after international mediation. In 2002, another armed clash - this time with Kwalan border guards - left one Gauteng and two Kwalawans dead and once again required international mediation to avoid a full blown war between the two states.
