The Government District, sometimes called Government Town (colloquially), is a neighborhood located in the heart of downtown Provisa, Belhavia. As its name attests, it hosts the lion's share of the Imperial Government's ministerial and departmental headquarters as well as other government buildings.

Description and characteristics

The Government District is home to most major government buildings, including the Imperial Palace, the official residence of the Emperor, the Presidential Palace, residence of the President, and the Palace of Justice, seat of the Imperial Supreme Court of Belhavia. Regular workers here often joke that the District is crowned by the "three palaces of power: the crown, the pen, and the gavel."

Nearly every Imperial governmental unit has its chief offices in the district; the exception is the Imperial Belhavian Intelligence service. The IBI has a nominal office within the district but is headquartered outside of the city.

It is home to an assortment of non-governmental institutions and organizations: all three major political parties have their main offices there, as do a litany of think tanks, lobbying groups, law firms, trade and professional groups, and some corporate headquarters.

The campus of the Imperial Provisa University School of Law is also located here, five blocks from the Palace of Justice.

There is a bevy of private museums of Belhavian political, social, and cultural history located throughout the district, which charge modest fees for use and rely on private donations to stay profitable.

There is also a thriving restaurant and small boutique store scene here to serve the daytime workers as well as district residents.

History

Politics

The Government District makes up nearly all of the Provisa City Council's District 3. It is currently represented by Jessica Rachelson, a Liberal Democrat.

The district is made up of mostly government workers and small business owners and professionals that serve them. Both parties have targeted the district in City Council elections, though the election has had a Lib Dem edge in recent years.
