Azanami (KS: 字波), officially the Grand Duchy of Azanami (KS: 字波大公国, Azanami Dai-kōkoku), is a landlocked country in eastern Komashi, and part of its confederal kingdom. It is bordered by Kaslana, Zaychik, and Sakura to the north, Hanabi and Maikaze to the west, and the two countries of Mirai and Vozlisch to the south. Its capital is Kuriyama, and its largest city is Aoisetsu, directly across the border of Hanabi, forming the Aoisetsu-Maaya Metroplex. Azanami is also known as the Land of Diplomacy (外交の国, Gaikō no Kuni).

One of the most powerful realms that are part of the confederal kingdom, Azanami is home to the extremely influential Azanami clan. The clan survived the Domain Wars, and such, Azanami is one of the only realms of Komashi that has its territorial and cultural extent intact, the other being the Principality of Aizawa, albeit the latter was a large and powerful monarchy ever since.

In the feudal era of Komashi, Azanami was known as the Azanami Domain, founded by Tateyama no Azanami. A renowned warrior, Azanami expanded his domain through concessions and treaties. Over the course of the Domain Wars, the domain remained unharmed and stayed out of the wars, and Azanami saw itself as the linking nation between the Komashi domains, the Zaychikian warlords, and Varforia. Concessions were made between the three localities, and Azanami saw itself expanding through diplomatic means, with no bloodshed. These efforts led it to gain its popular name as the land of diplomacy.

Azanami also excelled in the promulgation and integration of multiple Komashi cultures, even during the Domain Wars. As it sat between Varforia and the Zaychikians, the country championed transliteration of the Komashi, Varforian, and Zaychikian languages, creating the method known as Varforianisation using the Varforian script. The Zaychikians, which had used the Pisaniye, dropped the system in favour of the Azanami-backed Varforianisation of the Zaychikian language, in which is still in force today.

By the end of the Domain Wars, Azanami reformed itself into a full-fledged monarchy. Retaining a reputation across Komashi states as a diplomacy-oriented, cultural power, and well-developed country in the First Komashi Confederation, Azanami facilitated many confederal affairs until to its dissolution after the First Komashi Civil War. The country had also tried its shots in resolving the conflicts between the Principality of Aizawa and the Grand Duchy of Azura-Nishi with some success. After the civil war, Azanami was dissolved into the State of Kuriyama, but the power held by the Azanami clan prevented the Federalists to fully partition the land owned rightfully by the clan. This resulted only in a few partitions, but the State of Kuriyama's borders extensively retained much of its borders.

After the Second Komashi Civil War, in which Azanami was the instigator, the Grand Duchy was restored, and the clan's patriarch, Tougo Azanami, took over the throne. He would then be ousted after the foiled Northern Usonea War. Azanami then was embroiled in the Komashi War of Succession, in which the Kisume Fortress was pre-emptively attacked by Vozlisch forces but were ultimately foiled.
