The Greater Parliament of Ascolla-East Ternev (abbreviated GPAET) is the main legislative branch of the government of Ascolla-East Ternev. It was established in 1941 at the Fourth Treaty of Aurenia, and elections are held every five years.

As of January 5th, 2015, the GPAET has been in a deadlock, with no party or block achieving a majority, and as such power has been handed over to the diarchy until the next elections in October.

History

Foundations

blah blah blah basically conservatives are quick to take control in the parliament, which they manage to hold on to mostly uncontested until the 1970's, when left-wing groups began gaining power in what is now called the...

Socialist Troubles

In the early 1970's left-wing groups, generally from all over the spectrum and ill-coordinated grew more coordinated under the wing of Vladimir Ekadyr, reorganizing into the Greater Union Socialists in 1971, where they managed to secure 30% of seats in the 1971 election; A feat yet unheard of in the parliament. The sudden and quick rise of the GUS worried the conservative ASU, who began a smear campaign in retaliation and struck down most bills put forth by the GUS regardless of how much they attempted to work with the ASU.

Upset that the conservatives were blocking every move they attempted, the GUS finally organized a protest in the city of Escan in 1973; This did not end well.

1973 Escan Incident

What exactly went down during the protest in Escan is fairly disputed; The official statement claims that the protest grew out of control, and when the military was deployed to restore order the rioters attacked them, forcing them to retaliate, but this statement is disputed, with various eyewitness accounts claiming that when the military was deployed, they demanded the protest disperse. When it didn't, they attempted to disperse it by force, and when the protestors began throwing various objects, the military opened fire.

Regardless of who was to blame, the clash between protestors and military would leave thousands of people dead or dying (amongst them Vladimir Ekadyr) in the streets of Escan, thus the name of the incident.

In the wake of the clash between the GSU and the military, the Parliament, lead by the ASU, suspended the freedom of assembly in an emergency vote and banned all left-wing parties from the parliament.
