"Helland, mijn Vaderland"

"Heilland, myt Faðerland" (Hellonian: ᚼᛂᛁᛚᛚᛅᚿᛑ ; ᛘᚤᛐ ᛬ ᚠᛅᚦᛂᚱᛚᛅᚿᛑ; Ellandic: ᚻᛖᛚᛚᚨᚾᚦ, ᛗᛁᛏᛏ ᚠᛟᛋᛏᛖᚱᛚᚨᚾᚦ ), commonly translated into English as "Hellona, my Fatherland", is one of the national anthems of Hellona, the other being the March of all Winds acting as the royal anthem for the entire Hellonian Realm. Originally it functioned as a patriotic song, but was regarded as the de facto national anthem of mainland Hellona starting from the early 19th century. It was officially adopted in 1879, two years after the establishment of Hellona as a constituent state. It gained the status of the civic anthem and is in official capacities always played alongside the royal anthem, "Mars aller Winden" (March of all Winds). The original Hellonian poem the song is based on was written by famous Hellonian poet and writer Kristiaan Norssen in 1757, while the melody was written by Hans Hendriksen and Johan Schierbekken around 1758 to 1761.

History

Until the 19th century, the March of all Winds was regarded as the national anthem for Hellona and its overseas territories. It was mostly used in official capacities to accompany state and religious ceremonies. From the mid-18th century to the 19th century, mainland Hellona experienced an era of national romanticism. All aspects of (traditional) Hellonian life such as customs, music, dress and geography became central to the arts. This national awakening led to the demand for new patriotic songs, of which "Helland, mijn Vaderland" is one. Of all patriotic songs written during this period, "Helland, mijn Vaderland" became the most popular and began to be sung during patriotic occasions. Due to its association with patriotic national events, it came to be regarded as the anthem for mainland Hellona. In all official capacities, the March of all Winds was still used.

After the establishment of the Hellonian Realm in 1877, mainland Hellona became its own constituent country. Due to the March of all Winds now being designated as the royal anthem for the entire Hellonian Realm, "Helland, mijn Vaderland" began to be used as the anthem in official capacities in mainland Hellona. This led to a push towards adopted the song as the official anthem of mainland Hellona. In 1878, the Ryksdag voted on officially adopting the anthem. It officially became the national anthem of mainland Hellona in 1879.

Lyrics

Officially, both verses of the Hellonian and Ellandic versions were adopted as the national anthem and should officially be sung back to back. In most occasions, however, the first verse is sung in Hellonian while the second is sung in Ellandic.

From the high coast to immense mountains
Besides long rivers and boundless green heath
There is a country admired in thousand poems
Blessed earth from olden times
From stone and fresh beaches, arise anew memories
then you were grand and that is what you shall remain
It is thee I love, Hellona, my fatherland!

Från ostliga fjäll till västliga stränder
Där finns mitt rot, ur fornstora dar
Var sommarsol skiner på gröna äŋder
Du är välsignad, för dig jag blir kvar
Du gamla bräkkliga strand
Där tru, väl obruten
blommar fortfarande dokk i knopp sluten

var vinden blåser skepp till
Gudar gav oss den - från himlen där upptill
Dig älskar jag - Helland, mitt fosterland!

From eastern mountains to western beaches
There lies my root, from great olden days
Where summer sun shines on green meadows
Thou are blessed, for Thee I remain
Thou old craggy beach
There loyalty, still unbroken
blossoms still even though hidden in bud
Thou are the one I love - Hellona, my fatherland

Where does the summer nestle by flower meadows
more richly than here, down to the open beach
Where do in fields flow everlasting rivers
as beautiful as here in the land of menhirs
Thou old craggy beach
where winds blow ships to
Gods gave us it - from the heavens there above
Thou are the one I love - Hellona, my fatherland!
