The JChW 98-sik (from Menghean 지뢰, 대전차, 원통 98식, Jiroe, Daejŏncha, Wŏntong, 98-sik, "Mine, Anti-Tank, Cylinder, Type 98") is a type of anti-tank mine developed in Menghe. It destroys vehicles by means of a shaped charge which penetrates the vehicle's floor. The mine was designed for use by the JB-2 mine-dispensing system, and can also be deployed by helicopters and low-flying aircraft.

Design

While the JChW 98-sik can be planted by hand if necessary, it is optimized for use in low-velocity mine dispensing systems, including the JB-2 tracked minelayer. On most such systems, the mines are expelled from a tube by a low-strength propellant charge and allowed to fall over the battlefield. The mines have shaped charges on both ends, allowing them to function if upside-down; if they land on their sides, they are promptly turned upright by spring-loaded fins around the edges.

Ten seconds after landing, the JChW 98-sik arms itself. The mine is equipped with a magnetic disturbance fuse, to detonate the mine when a vehicle passes overhead; a pressure fuse, to detonate it when stepped on or driven over; and an anti-handling fuse to detonate it if enemy EOD troops attempt to remove or disarm it. It also carries a self-destruct timer. The latter can be set to one of three times prior to launch, depending on the required duration of the minefield.

The mine's double-ended warhead relies on the Misznay-Schardin effect to create an upward-firing EFP. This can defeat over 100 millimeters of steel, enough to penetrate the belly armor on any reasonably designed combat vehicle, and is optimized for after-armor effects. It aims to achieve a K-kill rather than an M-kill, killing the crew and detonating any loose ammunition stored inside the vehicle's hull. If the mine detonates under a vehicle's tracks, the EFP may not form correctly; its explosive power alone is sufficient to damage rubber tires on APCs, but is unlikely to immobilize tanks or IFVs.
