Japan (Japanese language: 日本, Nippon or Nihon), officially the Republic of Japan (Japanese language: 日本共和國, Nippon Kyōwakoku or Nihon Kyōwakoku) is an island country located in East Asia, spanning through the Sea of Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, East China Sea and Taiwan, forming an archipelago of 14,125 islands, five of which stand out: Honshu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa. It is the 20th most populous country in the world, comprising of 82 million inhabitants, of which 90% lives in cities, being one of the most urbanized nations on Earth. Japan has three capitals: Tokyo, Nagoya and Sapporo, for the executive, judiciary and legislative respectively. Tokyo also is the most populous city in Japan since 1996, being the third most populous metropolis in the world.
