Kalmykia (Kalmyk: Хальмг Hal'mg), officially the Republic of Kalmykia (Kalmyk: Хальмг Таңһч, Hal'mg Tanghch) is a sovereign country located in Eastern Europe. It borders Russia to the north and east, Terek and Don to the west, and Daghestan to he south. Kalmykia is dominated by the Kalmyks, who are a Mongolic-speaking people whose origins date back to the Mongol Empire and the Golden Horde. Kalmykia is the only country within Europe to have a large Buddhist population. The capital of Kalmykia is Elista.

Kalmykia formation started with the creation the Kalmyk Khanate. Kalmyks both raided and allied with Russia in turn, engaging in numerous military expeditions against the Crimean Tatars, the Ottoman Empire, neighboring Muslim tribes, and the highlanders of the North Caucasus.
