Karakent, (Қаракент), is the capital and largest city of the Socialist Union of Hordestan. It has 3,500,000 inhabitants and is located east of Lake Balko.

The city was founded around the year 1000 as a stopover on the trade route around Lake Balko. The horse people of the Amber Horde, invading the Hordestan area since the 13th century, built Karakent into their capital. By the 15th century at the latest, Karakent was able to expand its supremacy in the region, which eventually led to the establishment of the Khanate of the Amber Horde. After the triumph of Islam, especially in the southwest and south of the country, the khans in Karakent called themselves "Khans of Hordestan".

After the communist revolution and with the onset of a massive rural exodus, the state began building numerous satellite towns in the suburbs of Karakent in the 1950s. The general housing shortage in the fast-growing capital was to be solved with the relatively simple prefabricated buildings.

For reasons of space, it was decided in the 1970s to build a new city center as a planned city. Construction work began in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The new, spacious and linear city center connects the satellite towns with the rest of Karakent. It is located about 7 kilometers from the historic city center.
