The Labour Party is a social democratic federal political party in the Caldan Union. The party was founded in 1909 out of the trade union movement and bodies of socialist intellectuals. The Labour Party is one of the two major parties in the Caldan Union along with the National Party. On the political spectrum, it is to the left of the Liberal Party and to the right of the Socialist Party. The Labour Party is integrated at the federal and provincial levels with shared membership.
The first time Labour was in power was under John Ryan, whose policies leading a grand coalition got him expelled from the Labour Party. Ryan's insistent on remaining in power and campaigning as head of the "National Coalition" led to the creation of the National Party. No other federal Labour Government formed in the 20th century, although Labout governed in coalition with the Liberal Party in multiple administrations. In the 21st century, Labour has been in power under Oliver Welton, George Flynn, Lola Foster, and André Depreux.
Since 2019, Labour has been led by Jaspal Singh. Singh is the Leader of the Opposition and Labour is the second largest party in the House of Representatives.
