History
The history of Lokerrijk starts in the 13rd century, as part of the Carolingian Empire, under the name of Loqueriques, with capital in Brusels. It was an important economic and cultural location due to the conection with many important ports all over Europe and worldwide. In the 15th century, it was established the Kingdom of Belgia, with capital in Brusels and mostly Roman Catholic. The Protestant majority dismayed and started serious protests, many of them causing deaths as well as other many incidents in the main cities. The king Anselmus I, itself Roman Catholic, ordered a capture against the Protestant majority, but the Protestants took up arms, starting in October 4 1439 the First Civil War, known in Lokerrijk as the First Holy War. The war ended in winter 1502, resulting in numerous losses, poverty and diseases, but that didn't mean the end of the religious hostilities.
