Louisiana (Spanish: Luisiana; French: Louisiane), more commonly referred to in English as Luisiana and officially the Governorate of Louisiana (Spanish: Gobernación de la Luisiana; French: Gouvernorat de Louisiane), is a governorate of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. At over 2 million square kilometers, the territory is the country's largest administrative subdivision whilst also being its most sparsely populated. In 2019, 4.72 million people lived in the governorate, spread across an area nearly the entire size of Greenland. Its capital, New Orleans, is the largest port on the Gulf of Mexico, and is where most of the region's population lives.
