Mathon Terix was the Praetor of the Rihan Republic and a former Admiral of the Navy. Terix knew that while he had tremendous popularity with the military and with many segments of the lower classes because of his military career, his relationship with the Senate was tenuous at best. His appointment by the Continuing Committee was solely one of political expediency. Though he was known to have a 'neutral' viewpoint, he did quietly make small attempts at moving the Republic forward with modest if not liberal reforms. His advisor and confidant, Marel Avelik, was instrumental in making Terix's reign as Praetor as productive as possible.
Some efforts would be partially successful: the formal introduction of a free allotment of food to the poorest two-hundred thousand citizens in Dartha, passing legislation that would prevent senators from stuffing bills under consideration with irrelevant material and getting through some government reform with the establishment of provincial governors. To get many of his policies adopted, he would form an alliance with the militant Jaridan, the largest faction in the chamber; and the Nej'ahar, consisting of the wealthiest individuals in the entire Republic. While there were senators who supported him, there were some senators who were quietly plotting his downfall.
His Downfall
The three individuals who were angling to replace Terix were Garthan Darok, an incredibly wealthy landowner, Liviana Charvanek, the beautiful daughter of a well-established military family, and Morror Kassus, a power-hungry senator and general of the veteran 10th Legion. Terix saw his standing in the Senate start to fall with the losses from the Battle of Rinum, from Kassus' victory at Duronom, and cratering with the destruction of an entire legion during the initial weeks of the Siege of Canamar, capital of Enolia. His position with the Senate cratered following the defeat of two entire legions he sent to confront and arrest Morror Kassus following his declaration of war against the Republic. He was removed from office the day after the battle and replaced with Gathan Darok.
