Matthew Michael Murdock (born January 8, 1985) is an American lawyer and vigilante. Blinded as a child due to a chemical spillage, Murdock suffered severe sense impairment to his sight. However, with the loss of his sight came the heightening of his four remaining senses. Murdock assumed the role of a defense attorney in his later years, whilst simultaneously operating under the moniker of Daredevil, a ruthless vigilante who targets criminals by means of brutal, although non-lethal force. He is portrayed by Swull.[1]
Early life
Murdock was born on January 8, 1985, in the Purgatory district in Liberty City. His mother, Maddie Grace, was a nun who had returned to her duties at the church, leaving the young Murdock with his father, Jack Murdock, a failing boxer at the time. During his upbringing, Murdock was constantly urged by his father to commit to his studies, arguing that he wouldn't want to see his own son turn out like him. Murdock obliged, excelling in his education.
Chemical incident
On June 16, 1994, Murdock prevented a hit-and-run incident involving an elderly man and a truck transporting chemicals, resulting in a severe chemical spillage. Hazardous chemical compounds seeped into Murdock's eyes, rendering him incapable of seeing for the rest of his life. Although, with the blindness came an unusual improvement in his four remaining senses. During his time at a local hospital, Murdock constantly complained of severe hearing sensitivity, noting that he could hear everything in the near vicinity.
Early life, cont.
Following the incident, Murdock adjusted to his newfound circumstances, learning how to read Braille and understanding the length of his heightened senses, which involved near-superhuman sense of hearing, taste, smell, and touch. His father continued to fight, despite his constant failing, which eventually led to his murder following a bet gone horribly wrong. Initially broken by his father's death, Murdock was left to sulk at a local orphanage before being brought in by a fellow blind individual known only as 'Stick'. Stick acted as Murdock's trainer during the remainder of his early years, acting as a martial arts coach. He noted that Murdock must gain control of his 'gift', that gift being his heightened senses.
