From Middle Menapian wniudh, from Old Menapian wyniudh, from Primitive Menapian gwɪnɨd ("to kill"), from Proto-Brythonic gwėnɨd ("to kill; to strike"), from Proto-Celtic *gʷaneti ("to kill; to strike; to wound; to slay"). Cognate with Welsh gwanu ("to kill"), Breton gwanañ ("to kill"), Cornish gwana ("to kill"), Irish goin ("to wound; to stab; to sting; to hurt"), Scottish Gaelic goin ("to wound; to stab; to sting; to hurt").
