The Monarch of Vyvland is a semi-official position within Vyvland. Although it is hereditary and still recognised as legitimate, it holds no power over internal affairs within Vyvland, nor does it receive any money from the government. However, the monarchy was historically much more powerful, ruling as an absolute monarchy until the nineteenth century. Since the conclusion of the Wars of the Banners in 1728, the monarchy has been based in Vecanbek Palace in Vlud. The House of Stanmer-Bajre-Mruk is the current reigning house, and has been since the ascension of Adulv the New to the throne in 1822.

The first King to rule over the whole of Vyvland was Eylav fi Paavyl of the House of Stanmer from 1352, after conquering the last remaining state opposed to his rule, the Duchy of Wel. Eylav created the position of King for himself, adopting the word konung (now kong) from Geadish due to the lack of a native Vyvlander word; the closest cognate, kyning, had shifted in meaning to "God". Previously, rulers of specific areas had been known as erlar - "Earl", hærifyrer - "Duke" (literally army-leader, now Eervyrer), or fulkaarðer (literally guardian).

Since Eylav's time, 37 monarchs have followed, of which all but five have been men, due to the system of male primogeniture under which the monarchy operates. Traditionally, the monarchy has had a high degree of intermingling with royal families of other neighbouring countries, including those of Geadland, Inleda and Nevanmaa.

The monarchy was officially abolished in 1983, when North Vyvland, of which the King was the head of state, and South Vyvland, which was ruled by a series of anti-monarchist dictators, reunified. The incumbent King at the time, Verdnand, agreed to step down as part of the negotiations between the two states prior to their reunification. However, for some decades before this, the royals' power in the North had been incrementally reduced to that of a relatively restrictive ceremonial constitutional monarchy by that time. There is still a campaign in existence to restore the monarchy. It is spearheaded by the relatively minor Monarchist Party, who campaign for a return to a fairly strict, powerful monarchy. However, the number of more moderate monarchists is estimated to be much higher than this. A poll conducted in November 2013 showed a 45% support rate coupled with a 33% disapproval for the restoration of the monarchy. Support is still heavily divided along former north-south lines.

The royal family of Vyvland maintains an extensive portfolio of properties throughout Vyvland, but mainly concentrated in the former North. Their main residence is the extensive Vecanbek Palace, located on the southern outskirts of Vlud, where the monarch has lived since the eighteenth century. Prujerj Castle, Lorence Castle and a winter retreat in the Slic Mountains near Zwe are the most significant other properties possessed by the monarchy.
