The Keflistan National Railroad Corporation, doing business as National Rail, is a passenger railroad service that provides medium and long-distance intercity service in Keflistan.
Founded in 1991 as a quasi-public corporation to nationalize passenger rail routes, National Rail receives a combination of provincial and federal subsidies but is managed as a for-profit organization. The Keflistan federal government through the Secretary of Transportation owns all the company's issued and outstanding preferred stock.
National Rail serves more than # destinations in all provincinces, operating more than # trains daily over 21,400 miles (34,000 km) of track. Some track sections allow trains to run as fast as 150 mph (240 km/h).
Operations
Routes
National Rail is required by law to operate a national route system. National Rail has presence in all provinces and the Federal District. National Rail services fall into three groups: short-haul service in the Central Corridor, provincial-supported short-haul service outside the Central Corridor, and medium- and long-haul service known within National Rail as the National Network. National Rail receives federal funding for the vast majority of its operations including the central spine of the Central Corridor as well as for its National Network routes. In addition to the federally funded routes, National Rail partners with transportation agencies in provinces to operate other short and medium-haul routes outside of the Central Corridor, some of which connect to it or are extensions from it.
Guest Rewards
National Rail's loyalty program, Guest Rewards, is similar to the frequent-flyer programs of many airlines. Guest Rewards members accumulate points by riding National Rail and through other activities, and can redeem these points for free National Rail tickets and other rewards.
Commuter services
Through various commuter services, National Rail serves an additional 1.1 million passengers per year in conjunction with provnicial and regional authorities.
Rolling stock
National Rail owns 2,142 railway cars and 425 locomotives for revenue runs and service, almost exclusively made by Albion Locomotive Works in Ibica. Examples include the ALW 200 diesel locomotive, the ALW 201, and the ALW 203. Occasionally private cars or loaned locomotives from other railroads can be found on National Rail trains.
On-board services
Classes of service
National Rail offers four classes of service: First Class, Sleeper Service, Business Class, and Coach Class:
- First Class: First Class service is only offered on Central Corridor trains. Seats are larger than those of Business Class and come in a variety of seating styles (single, facing singles with table, double, facing doubles with table and wheelchair accessible). First Class is located in a separate car from business class and is located at the end of the train (to reduce the number of passengers walking in the aisles). A car attendant provides passengers with hot towel service, a complimentary meal and alcoholic beverages. First Class passengers have access to ClubRail lounges located at select stations.
- Sleeper Service: Sleeper Service comprises private room accommodations on long-distance trains. Rooms are classified into roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, accessible bedrooms, and, on some trains, family bedrooms. Included in the price of a room are attendant service and on most routes, full hot meals. At night, attendants convert rooms into sleeping areas with fold-down beds and linens. Shower facilities with towels and bar soap are available. Complimentary juice, coffee and bottled water are included as well. Sleeper car passengers have access to all passenger facilities aboard the train. Sleeper passengers have access to ClubRail lounges, Metropolitan Lounges, and unattended First Class Lounges located at select stations.
- Business Class: Business Class seating is located in a dedicated car or section of the train. While the specific features vary by route, many include extra legroom and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks. Seats in business class recline, are typically appointed in leather and feature a fold-down tray table, foot rest, individual reading light, and power outlet. Business Class passengers have access to Metropolitan Lounges located at select stations and may purchase a daily access pass to select ClubRail locations.
- Coach Class: Coach Class is the standard class of service on all National Rail trains. Seats in coach recline and feature a fold-down tray table, foot rest, individual reading light, and power outlet. Coach cars on long-distance trains are configured with fewer seats per car so that passengers have additional legroom and seats which are equipped with leg rests.
Wi-Fi and electronic services
Most National Rail passengers have access to free Wi-Fi. The service has developed a reputation for being unreliable and slow due to its cellular network connection; on some routes it is usually unusable, either freezing on the login page or, if it manages to log in, failing to provide any internet bandwidth.
Baggage and cargo services
National Rail allows carry-on baggage on all routes; services with baggage cars allow checked baggage at selected stations. The National Rail Express] cargo service provides small-package and less-than-truckload shipping between most National Rail stations that handle checked baggage. Cargo travels alongside checked luggage in baggage cars. Service and hours vary by station, limited by available equipment and staffing. Nearly all stations with checked baggage service can handle small packages, while large stations with forklifts can handle palletized shipments. National Rail Express also offers station-to-station shipment of human remains to many cities.
Public funding
National Rail receives annual appropriations from federal and provincial governments to supplement operating and capital programs.
