Novorussia, (Novorussian: tr. Novorossiya, Russian: Новороссия, tr. Novorossiya,; Ukrainian: Новоросія, romanized: Novorosiya), officially the Union of People's Republics, or informally, Novorossiya or New Russia. is a country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the west, by the Ukraine and Malorussia to the north and by Crimea and the Black Sea to the south.
Etymology
The name Novorussia (Russian: Новорoссия; Novorussian: Новaро́сія) is derived from the term "Novaya Rus'", which meant "New Russia". The region was given that name with the the comquest of the Crimean Khanate by the Russian Empire. The Rus' peoples were traditionally divided between the Great Russians (Russians), the Little Russians (Russian: Малоруссия; Malarusian: Малaрусия) and the White Russians (Russian: Белороссия; Byelorussian: Беларусия, Belorussians). Prior to the formation of the Soviet Union, the New Russians were included into the traditional term of Little Russians, along with the Malorussians, Ukrainians, and Ruthenians. However, a separate ethnogenesis occurred among the Prichernomorian Rus' in the Black Sea region of Malorussia between the 1930s and the 1950s which developed their own identity apart from the Pridneprovian (Malorussians), the Zadneprovian (Ukrainian), and Galician (Ruthenian) counterparts.
