The Commonwealth of Ontario, colloquially known as Ontario, is one of the 45 states which makes up the United States of America. Located in the Great Lakes region, the state is bordered by Nipissing to the north, maritime borders with Ohio and Pennsylvania to the south, Hiawatha to the east, and Michigan to the west.

Ontario and Nipissing were once part of the Province of Upper Canada, which was governed by the British. In 1837, Upper Canada and Lower Canada would revolt against British control. The two Canadas would obtain independence from Britain in 1841, thanks to American help. Lower Canada would go on to become the modern-day Canadian nation, whereas Upper Canada would find itself in a difficult situation. Upper Canadian President William Lyon Mackenzie would initiate discussions with the United States for Upper Canada's admittance into the Union, knowing that the territory could not survive on its own.
