The Pherigan Armed Forces (PAF) is the unified military of Pherigo, comprising sea, land, and air elements referred to as the Pherigan Navy (PN), Pherigan Army, and Pherigan Air Force (PAF). Personnel may belong to either the Regular Force or the Reserve Force. Current authorized strength is 160,000 members.

The command-in-chief of the Pherigan Armed Forces is constitutionally vested in the President of Pherigo. The professional head of the organization is the chief of the Defence Staff, who under the direction of the Secretary of National Defense and manages the operations of the Pherigan Armed Forces.

Current structure

The Pherigan Forces 159,916 personnel are divided into a hierarchy of numerous ranks of officers and non-commissioned members. The President appoints, on the advice of the chief of the Defense Staff (CDS) as the highest-ranking commissioned officer in the Armed Forces and its commander. In this role the CDS heads the Armed Forces Council, which also includes the vice chief of the Defense Staff and the commanders of the Pherigan Navy, Pherigan Army, Pherigan Air Force, Pherigan Joint Operations Command, Pherigan Special Operations Forces Command, as well as certain other designated personnel. The Armed Forces Council generally operates from National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) in Charleston, Federal District.

The Pherigan Forces operate out of 27 military establishments across the country, including NDHQ. This number has been gradually reduced since the 1970s with bases either being closed or merged. Both officers and non-commissioned members receive their basic training at the Stillwater Training Center in Colina. Officers will generally either directly enter the Pherigan Armed Forces with a degree from a civilian university or receive their commission upon graduation from the Pherigan Officer Candidate School in Charleston. Specific element and trade training is conducted at a variety of institutions throughout Pherigo, and to a lesser extent, the world.

Pherigan Navy

The Pherigan Navy (PN), headed by the commander of the Pherigan Navy, includes 35 warships and submarines deployed in three fleets: Maritime Forces Cortesia (MARCOR) at Naval Base Portsmith on the north coast, Maritime Forces Black Sea (MARBLCK) at Naval Base Bremen the west coast, and Maritime Forces Bosphorus (MARBOS) at Naval Station Columbia on Edward Island, in Ibica. The fleet is augmented by various aircraft and supply vessels. The PN participates in international exercises and operations, and ships are deployed all over the world in support of multinational deployments.

The Pherigan Special Operations Forces Command (PHESOFCOM) is a formation capable of operating independently but primarily focused on generating special operations forces (SOF) elements.

Defence policy

Modern Pherigan defence policy has consistently stressed three overarching objectives:

In addition to its core missions, the Pherigan Armed Forces also contribute to the conduct of Pherigan defence diplomacy through a range of activities, including the deployment of Pherigan Defence Attachés, participation in bilateral and multilateral military forums, ship and aircraft visits, military training and cooperation, and other such outreach and relationship-building efforts.

Military expenditures

The Constitution of Pherigo gives the federal government exclusive responsibility for national defence, and expenditures are thus outlined in the federal budget. For the 2021–22 fiscal year, the amount allocated for defence spending was $10 billion.

The federal government now factors in military-related spending from departments such as Veterans Affairs, Public Works, and the Treasury Board when calculating "defence spending". It is believed that this move was made in order to improve Pherigo's defence-related reporting metrics.
