Lieutenant Colonel Richard Johan de Vit GWM was a Satavian army officer who was killed in action on the first day of fighting during the Defence of Port Hope. de Vit was later posthumously awarded the Great War Medal for his bravey.
de Vit had been ordered to seize King Charles Mound - which would later become the target of some of the bloodiest fighting during the battle - desperately short of forces in the city, he split his divsion and took only 700 men of A Company, 7th Division - during the assault, de Vit was killed instantly when three bullets struck him in the head.
