The name stems from when the colony was first established by Rohstian merchants and sailors establish ports which soon became commercially successful due to their convenient geographic location during the colonial era. The ports of the not!african colony quickly became wealthy adding support to the notion of the colonial harours being rich.

By the 17th century Rohst had established itself as both a naval as well as a mercantile power. This too happened in conjunction with a weakening Whitlander navy and mercantile influence due to wars with its war with Torchina in 1639 and the aubsequent Second Argallan Rebellion in 1640. With this occurrence, the Rohstian !East India company sought expansion to better secure its major trade route to the spice-rich !Indies. Thus the Rohstian crown sought to establish a permanent and well-supplied harbour at a strategic location of a vital trade lane.

The f8rst colony of Rijkhaven was named Asterkirk after a Rohstian Trinitarian pastor named Manfred Amster, who was part of the crew of the trade vessel "Marianne" which had shipwrecked nearby modern day Gelbahoorn. It was discovered that the surviving crew had established a small camp after establishing rudimentary communication with a larger Untu tribe in the area. The location was deemed suitable for development and agriculturalization. with The first permanent building of the settlement was the meetinging house built by pastor Amster, and thus the name of the settlement was named after it. Over time, "vrijburgers ("free burghers") from Rohstian ports began settling the area with their families, attracted by promises of large, arable tracts of land to be purchased at a low price and other untapped potential in the area. With them were slaves from the Rohstian !Indies, and thus the bourgening colony of Amsterkirk became a key port in the region both for later colonization efforts as well as a major stopping port for traders from other Vreyan nations.

Once the colony of Amsterkirk became a thriving port, conflict had arisen between the colonist boers ("farmers") and the local tribes. Grazing rights over imported cattle between colonists and the nearby Moltu tribe began with tribesmen killing cattle on multiple occasions. Soon the first Amsterkirker militia was formed, and would remain a key patriotic component in Rijkhavener history due to its valiant efforts defending ranches from assault.
