Nguyễn Hiền Bình (August 16, 1982), better known by his stage name SMD, is a Quenminese musician-songwriter. He is also known as Sạch Mỹ Đình, Mỹ Bình, and DJ Hiền Bình.

Early Life

SMD was born Nguyễn Hiền Bình to Nguyễn Hiền Thịnh Sang, computer scientist, and Đình Thị Ly Nguyệt, a musician in the Nghệ An Royal Philharmonic Ensemble. When he was 4, he always played on a toy xylophone his parents bought for him when he was a toddler whenever he was bored. Under his mother's guidance, he was home-schooled on piano and violin at the age of 5, and was required to practice with her four hours a day, six hours at maximum. At times, whenever he did not get some parts of a music score right, his mother would scold him many times, not to mention that she would threaten him with no bathroom breaks if he didn't play the part right. After tear-jerking moments of practicing, SMD managed to compose himself and comply with his mother. Throughout his youth, he was admired by his peers and their parents on his performaces in piano and violin recitals, and won several competitions, mostly first and second places.

During this youth time, he also had the admiration for electronic music, being that he enjoyed listening to the sounds of Suokan's production of the soundtrack of the film Coverter. His mother took away the opportunity to expand his mind into the genre, deeming it "too distracting." However, at times, she would let him, if not letting him listen to it in secret, even in bedtime.

When he was twelve, at the time of the Internet Revolution, his father allowed himself to buy a computer desktop for him. His mother protested this decision, saying that he would forget to practice every day from using it; however, determined to keep her child happy, she let it go much to his father's advice. There, he discovered electronic music of different genres, even by his favorite artist. Eventually, he started to deliberately get exhausted from playing classical music, in which mother completely disapproved of. After taking his computer away, he completely broke down and got into a fight with her. Disillusioned, his mother decided to not teach him anymore, in spite of the fact that she was disappointed.

Eventually, he earned a double major in music studies and computer science in Chiếc Bạc Provincial University.
