Perez is known by the nickname "the Comrade", coined by journalist Patrick Powell. Originally intended as a derogatory term aimed at critiquing Perez's socialist-leaning policies, the nickname has since been embraced by Perez's supporters, who have repurposed it as a symbol of solidarity. When asked about the nickname, Perez remarked, "I love it. Being called a socialist is a badge of honour".
