The Sarihung Uprising, or the May 19 Democratic Uprising, is a civil conflict that occurred from May 19 to 25, 1982 in the city of Sarihung. The uprising started out as a civilian protest advocating for the democratization of the country after 27 years of authoritarian and military rule under Park Byung-chul and Kangjon Ha-sun. It then escalated into a massacre as troops from the Joyonghean Sovereign Army opened fire on civilians occupying Pyongjin Street, and, with collaboration of the city's police, it further descended into a violent, indiscriminate witch-hunt.

The uprising first lead to the blame, trial and incarceration of Tae Sung-eun and members of the Socialist Underground Movement for instigating the violence. However, after further investigations were called upon by Tongbang Iseul and Yeunggyeong in 1990, it was revealed that Kangjon Ha-sun and his cabinet were accused of fraudulence to hide their shame of handling the uprising, and were subsequently sentenced to life in prison without parole.
