The Scimitar-class escort frigate is a class of frigates in service in the Concordian Navy. Developed and built by Sampson & Co Craft Yards as a replacement for the older Sirius-class of light frigates. Designed as an escort frigate to support larger warships, the Scimitar-class was conceived to perform fighter screening and escort duties for fleet, influencing the ship to be heavily equipped with secondary weapon batteries and point defences. Developed during the latter stages of the Great Intergalactic War, the Scimitar-class was designed to be far more effective at countering the large numbers of spacecraft such as fighters and bombers that the Oderran Confederation were frequently dependent on in space battles than the preceding frigate designs like the Sirius-class whose armament were more specifically dedicated to ship-to-ship engagements.

Weapons

Guns

The Scimitar-class features a light armament of guns when compared to dedicated anti-ship frigates such as the Sabre-class. Unlike the conventional turrets of preceding frigate designs, the Scimitar-class has a primary gun armament of two APP-VER2.1 antimatter accelerators in spinal configuration, where the weapons run along the centre of the vessel to maximise the velocity of the projectile launched.

Defences

Shielding

The Scimitar-class utilises unconventional displaced shielding technology, which projects shielding in a ellipsoid "bubble" around the exterior hull of the vessel as a measure to increase the stand-off distance against anti-ship missiles and torpedoes. While the system was highly effective at dissipating the plasma warheads of Oderran spacecraft, it proved to be vulnerable against the kinetic armaments of comparable frigate designs, such as the Oderran Invigilator-class.

Armour

Scimitar-class frigates are equipped with laminated electromagnetic hull plating designed to dissipate energy warheads, with the hull sporting 221 cm thick nanonium armour plating that was reinforced by tungsten duramide.
