The Shark War was a wildlife management military operation undertaken in Venadia to address concerns the freshwater shark population in the Somer Lake threatened the areas sturgeon population. The operation lasted for two weeks and was undertaken by the brown-water division of the Princely Navy and cost a total of 120,000 NSD. The operation was a complete failure, with only three sharks being killed, but the mines deployed in the lake took a massive toll on the sturgeon population. It would take until 1932 for the population and the caviar industry to recuperate. Due to its nature as a military operation, the incident was referred to as the "Shark War" by the press.
