Known to have scored more than 1,542 kills (342 during the Estharian Civil War and 1,200 during the Second Europan War), the highest number of sniper kills in any major war. He used a Balambian M39 Nagant, the Balambian version of the East Europan M1891 Nagant Rifle. Aside from it, he also used a Kpist/-31 submachine gun. Määttä estimated that in over the span of 15 years of war, he has gathered more than 1,500 kills.

Considered to be the greatest and deadliest sniper who ever lived, He immediately received the Laureate Cross of Saint Henry, the highest award for gallantry in the Estharian Army and the Grand Cross of Balamb, the highest award for gallantry in the Balambian Army. Generalissimo August Carl Gustav Lindholm personally gave him the awards. He also received the Lucian Distinguished Service Order from Field Marshal Archibald Sugiyama for his actions during the Nepali-Bhutania Campaign.

Määttä left a lasting legacy and was a namesake for several insitutions. The military charity service in Esthar and Balamb was named Simo Määttä Foundation in his honour. The Lucian destroyer, HMS Simo Määttä was commissioned in 2001 in his presence.
