Takao (Miranian: 高雄; Gothic: 𐍄𐌰ᚴ𐌰𐍉; abbreviated TA) is a province of Akashi. Located in the north, it borders Kobi to the east and Kagi to the south.
With a total area of 13.100 km2, it is Akashi's smallest province.
Geography
The province's territory is dominated by the Seihō Sanmyaku in the south and centre, with the coastal areas being flat plains.
The largest rivers are Shirakawa in the south (with Hōrin located at its confluence with the Bara Sea) and Ōnogawa in the north.
Demographics
The 2020 census recorded a population of 1.192.956. The largest cities are:
- Hōrin — the regional capital.
- Kagishi — famed as the centre of Akashi's geisha and oiran culture, earning it the nickname Daihanamachi ("Great Flower Town"). The city's dialect (嘉義市言葉 Kagishi-kotoba) is seen as an elegant and feminine dialect of Miranian.
Economy
Takao's economy is dominated by mining, agriculture, and tourism.
Kagishi's economy is mainly based on tourism, while Hōrin has a strong services sector.
Politics
Takao has traditionally been seen as a stronghold of Akashian paternalistic conservatism. It was dominated by the National Union during its heyday, and has largely favoured the light blue bloc since the 1980s.
