Tōnobe was an dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Taoist Navy (ITN) during the late 1910s. While the ship was designed to be built as a full class of ships, this was determined as "unnecessary". The Taoist Empire had felt that the Iwanai-class battleship was almost as capable as the Tōnobe-class, and construction could be started on more ships of the older class immediately. It is unknown how many of this class the ITN planned to build, but it is known that four additional Iwanai class battleships were built instead.
