Tasarkan, or the Tasarkan Deep Mine, is an ultra-deep tabular gold and uranium mine in the Tasarkan Basin of southeast Arkava. The mine began operation in 1990, after the discovery of gold and other precious metals in the region. It is the deepest mine in Teremara, and one of the most substantial mines in the world in terms of production and magnitude, reaching over 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) below the surface. A trip from the surface to the mine's deepest point takes about an hour, with plans to continue digging to find more reserves and exceed over 4 kilometers in depth. Critics of Tasarkan have stated the mine induces huge environmental, sociological, seismic and societal costs, but the national importance of the mine and the revenue it creates has largely kept the government from taking any action towards closing or reducing the speed of material extraction from the mine entirely.
