Telis S.A., is a telecommunications company in Lisander. It is the largest provider of fixed-line telephony and FTTx Internet in Lisander. Founded in 1999 as a private company, Telis acquired the assets of former Telecomunicações de Lisander, that already traded as TELIS since 1955. After privatisation, also co-owns most of the submarine cables reaching the principality.
History
Government-owned
Telecomunicações de Lisander (Lisander Telecommunnications) were nationalised in 1935, when Companhia Telephonica de Lisander went bankrupt. The Lisander government cancelled the debt owed by the previous owners and took over the company, using the structure to extend telegraph and telephone services to the mid-north and north of the country.
With the whole country connected, the new company started looking for international connections. In the 1950s, in partnership with COMTEA (Companía Telefónica de Aristia), it founded its first subsidiary, ASTELIS, responsible for establishing, in partnership with ExTel, the first submarine cable linking Hesperidesia and Teudallum, Australis-1.
Privatisation
Lisander faced a serious crisis between 1996 and 1998 that heavily devalued the Lis, and the effects were felt in public companies. With the rise of power of the Democratic Alliance group in the Parliament, both houses started to push the crown to allow privatisation of government-owned companies, like Air Lisander, TELIS, as well as further relinquishment of companies already privatised or partly-owned, like RTL (public television) and ELP (oil and gas). The government and the crown accepted the privatisation of TELIS. However, amid widespread fear that foreign investment would further devalue the national currency, this acceptance was subject to two conditions:
1. A ban on the sale of more than 33 per cent (one third) of the shares, as well a prohibition of offering thr effective control of the company to foreign investors.
2. Immediate reservation of 34 per cent (one third + 1%) of the shares for the Lisander Sovereign Fund.
In January 1, 1999, the Government of Lisander relinquished its control of TELIS for the Lisander Sovereign Fund, and 33% of its shares were introduced on the Lisander Stock Exchange. In January 1, 2000, the remaining 33% of the shares were listed.
After privatisation, Telis sold all of its mobile phone operations to newly established Itel and foreign-based TELE+R. Monopolies on telephone and internet services were also ended, but Telis continued to offer the services with its own structure.
Telis Monsa
As soon as the finances were recovered, Telis started to venture into foreign opportunities. In 2001, Telis was one of the bidders to the privatisation of Telefónica de Monsa, and acquired 68% of the shares and establishing as one of the private fixed-telephone operators in that nation, under the name Telis Monsa S.A. Later, Telis was the first company to establish an optic fibre cable to Monsa, named LiMons, between Kasandora Supermarine Data Centre and Faro de Canillo.
Services
In Lisander
- Fixed line telephone: For long the flagship of company, lost space to mobile and internet.
- Broadband and FTTx Internet Services: Covering every commune in Lisander, the cabled internet services actually are the biggest sector of Telis.
- .LS and .LIS registers: Telis has retained the role, established before privatisation, of managing Lisander's domain names (.LS and .LIS).
- Mobile telephone and internet: Although it originally sold its mobile operations, Telis later re-established them, with a different focus from conventional mobile phone services. Unlike Tele+R, !tel and One, which offer monthly plans but focus mainly on pre-paid SIM cards, Telis offers a mobile service with a focus on high-quality internet and unlimited calls, but at a higher price than its competitors. This makes Telis only the fifth largest mobile operator in the country, with no more than 1.4% of the market, but with 19% of all "corporate mobile" customers.
- Infrastructure: As well as offering wired internet services, Telis also works on building network infrastructure for companies and the government. It also continues to co-own the submarine cables that run from the principality, connecting Lisander to the rest of Astyria and other regions.
Outside Lisander
Telis offers Broadband and FTTx Internet Services in the neighboring nations of Aristia and Monsa, as well as connection infrastructure. Telis is the sole provider of Internet Services for Neomaris, a lisanderian protetorate in the eastern continent of Esportiva region.
Kasandora Supermarine Data Centre
Kasandora Supermarine Data Centre is a former oil rig that was bought from ELP by Telis in 2014 to be one of the company's data centres, in line with its plan to expand the FTTx market. After two years of work on renovations and retrofits, which included the addition of two specific lines just for the platform and left part of the southeast of Lisander without internet for two days in March 2016, the Data Centre was inaugurated in August of the same year. Currently, it hosts three optic fiber cables: LISNAT-3, LIMONS and ASTELIS_F1, with four more to be completed in the next 18 months.
