Template:Infobox philosopher/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Infobox philosopher. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template is a customized wrapper for {{Infobox person}}. Any field from {{Infobox person}} can work so long as it is added to this template first. It will also emit the same hCard and Geo microformats as {{Infobox person}} . Questions? Just ask here or over at Template talk:Infobox person. |
This template uses Lua: |
This template is used to provide biographical information on anyone who might be considered a philosopher. If the philosopher held or holds a political or other public office (e.g. Alan Greenspan), {{Infobox officeholder}} is probably more suitable.

To use this template, copy the text above to the top of a biography article. Note that parameter names are lowercase.
Parameters
All parameters are optional, and if left blank will not appear in the infobox:
- era should be selected from Category:Philosophy by period
- region should be selected from Category:Philosophy by region
- school_tradition should be selected from Category:Philosophical traditions or List of schools of philosophy
- Entries in influences, influenced, and notable ideas should be explained in the main text of one of the articles. Those that are not mentioned in the main text may be deleted.
- For living people supply only the year for birth date unless the exact date is already WIDELY published, as per WP:DOB. Treat such cases as if only the year is known, so use {{birth year and age}} or a similar option.
Microformat
The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the person's details parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia or via a browser tool operated by a reader, to (for example) add the subject to an address book or database. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.
Sub-templates
Date-of-birth ("bday") information will only be included in the microformat if {{birth date}}, or {{birth date and age}} are used in the infobox. (Do not use these if the date is before 1583). Be cautious about using these if the person is still living, per WP:DOB.
To include a URL, use {{URL}}.
Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.
Classes
hCard uses HTML classes including:
- adr
- agent
- bday
- birthplace
- category
- country-name
- deathdate

- given-name
- honorific-prefix
- honorific-suffix
- label
- locality
- n

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.
Tracking categories
- Category:Pages using deprecated image syntax (0) – Used by Module:InfoboxImage to track articles where an infobox uses image syntax in the format |image=[[File:Example.jpg]]. To exclude articles from this category, change it to |image=Example.jpg.
- Category:No local image but image on Wikidata (690) – Used by Template:Wikidata image to track articles where an infobox has no image but Wikidata has an image name. To exclude articles from this category, add an image or
|nocat_wdimage=yes
to the infobox.

End of Infobox person
Alternatively {{infobox philosopher}} may be embedded within {{infobox person}}, using |module in the latter, as shown here. This allows the use of more fields by drawing on both infoboxes. For an example, see Hannah Arendt.
