History
Founded in 2113 by the Caliph to contest elections scheduled for 2115, the Traditionalist Party won the 2115 Majilis-Ash-Shura election (the first election for the parliament) and the next election in 2119. Thus it has won both Al-Khilafi national elections for the Majilis-Ash-Shura.
It has generally won votes from skilled manual and white-collar workers as well as owners of small businesses, military personnel, the nobility (including Islamic scholars) and certain educated professions (such as schoolteachers and Islamic bankers).
Ideology and politics
It is generally a right-wing Islamist party. Unlike most conservative Muslim parties, however, it supports women’s right to early-stage abortion (in other words, abortion being legal before 18 weeks of pregnancy) and some of it’s members have a supportive stance on gay rights.
Economically most of it’s views are in line with right libertarianism (such as low taxes and opposition to tariffs and to restrictive immigration laws as well as support for the continued legality of private schools).
Despite it supports laws that continue criminalisation of the charging of interest as well as the criminalisation of alcohol (except for medical or religious purposes), most other drugs (including recreational cannabis) and prostitution.
It supports a number of environmental laws including carbon emissions taxes and laws against the damaging of natural habitats.
Criticism
Internationally, the Traditionalist Party is criticised for favouring Muslims and supposedly being “sexist.”
Conversely some other right-wing Islamist parties criticise them as “excessively permissive.”
