The Type 1062 missile boat (Menghean: 1062형 유도탄정 / 1062型誘導彈艇, 1062-hyŏng Yudotan-jŏng) is a fast missile boat with retractable hydrofoils developed for the Menghean Navy. It is intended to be used for fast strikes on enemy vessels operating near the shore, though in peacetime it has seen limited use as a sea patrol and drug-interdiction craft. As of early 2017, there were 44 Type 1062 vessels in Menghean service, with plans to build a total of 60.

For export service, the type has been marketed under the name "Chŏllima" (천리마 / 千里馬), or "flying horse." This name is not assigned to any individual ships in Menghean service.

Design

The Type 1062's powerplant consists of a powerful CODOG arrangement, with two diesel engines propelling the ship at cruising speeds. For higher-speed travel, power is switched to the gas turbine, which draws in water from intakes in the aft foils and drives it out a large waterjet in the vessel's stern. While traveling at normal speeds, the rear foils can be lifted out of the water along hinges parallel to the sides of the hull, and the fore foil can be partially retracted into the vessel's hull. This configuration reduces the vessel's draft, allowing it to navigate shallower waters in coastal areas or harbors. Notably, the forward foil still provides some lift in this position, though speed on the diesel engines is limited to 14 knots.

The vessel's main armament consists of eight YDH-28 anti-ship missiles, which are hidden inside angled four-tube containers on either side. These quad-tube launchers are hidden inside protective boxes to reduce their contribution to the ship's {[wp|Radar_cross-section|radar cross section}}.

Defensive armament is provided by a GBM-30/6SH 30mm rotary cannon forward, which is paired with a fire-control radar on the superstructure. In addition to serving as a Close-In Weapons System against other anti-ship missiles, this weapon can be slaved to an electro-optical targeting module and fired at enemy small craft on the surface. Both the gun and its fire control radar are fitted in reduced-RCS mounts.

For additional air defense, the vessel carries a dedicated SAM launcher on the stern. This arrangement consists of a central chair with four YDH-38 missile tubes overhead, two on either side. It is manually aimed and fired, but can receive target information from the ship's onboard radar. Twelve additional missile reloads are carried within the ship.

Operational use

In the absence of a major naval conflict, the Type 1062 first managed to prove itself in less conventional conflicts. Following the collapse of the government in the Socialist Republic of Innominada, Type 1062 hydrofoils supplemented the Menghean Maritime Patrol Forces in counter-piracy operations around the unstable region. Their high speed has proven very useful in fast-reaction sorties related to drug interdiction, allowing border forces to "sprint" out to reported suspicious vessels before they can pass too deep into friendly waters. Crews have, however, complained about the relatively weak gun armament and lack of additional space for long-term transport of soldiers or prisoners as a limiting factor in the vessel's patrol role.

During the Innominadan Crisis, Type 1062 hydrofoils played an instrumental part in "Operation Mist Lake," the effort to put Innominada's remaining naval assets in the Northeast out of action. Wartime MCTV broadcasts credited Type 1062-class vessels were with sinking or heavily damaging 12 Innominadan warships, mostly corvettes, though later reports have cast doubt on these claims amidst questions of double-counting. One Type 1062 vessel was lost during the conflict, and another was severely damaged and scuttled by friendly forces.
