Description

The Type 10 Suspended Rapid Transit Train, also known as either the Type 2010 or New Type Suspended Monorail is a suspended monorail train type designed by the Nauchrten State Railway Design Bureau with assistance from Statens Mekaniska Verkstäder and the State Technical College. It is exclusively used used by the Nauchrten State Railway on the 57 km long suspended monorail system in Nauchrtenkapitell, it also sees service in Donnerland.

The Type 10 family Consists of End Cars and Passenger Cars. However the Nauchrten State Railway does not currently run any service using passenger wagons, prefering to connect several "End Car Sets" in series or simply to launch additional services during events of peak demand. The End Cars have a seperated crew compartment at the relative front. With the driver being seated on the right hand side of the compartment, the left hand side has a desk area meant for the Conductor, with a large part of the crew compartments floor beeing glass to allow the driver superior vision.

Of note is that since the introduction of the contactless State Railway card conductors are no longer present on services on the suspended monorail system, as passengers have to pass through revolving entry points where tickets and contactless cards are scanned. These entry/exit points are manned by Station crew.

History

The first suggestions to replace the Y2 Hängande Enkelspårig Vagn came during the latter half of the 1970's, as they were approaching the end of the designed 25 year lifespan. However at that time this was deemed economically inferior to upgrading the Y2 series, as the suspended monorail at that time was seeing less and less traffic. Mostly as a tourist attraction. By the late 1990's however the problem could no longer be ignored, with dilapidated interiors, low punctuality numbers and rolling stock now far advance in age. Several Y2's had failed inspection citing dangerous amounts of corrosion on the suspension mechanism, and the Nauchrten Rail Administration ordered all traffic to be halted at once; ordering each Y2 to be inspected before service could be resumed.

Nauchrten State Railway in turn investigated the idea of removing the monorail from service and demolish it fully. It was argued that it served no practical purpose on regards to the public transit system, and any new rolling stock would have to be designed from the ground up, and probably be more expensive compared to replacing it with a bus service. However a public campaign to keep the the monorail to any degree won traction and the State Railway promised in a public letter to investigate the possibility keeping the monorail and running it with renovated Y2's as a museum service.

This investigation came to involve a group of students from the State Technical College, who before being involved presented a early draft on how new modern stock on the line could make it a competitive part of the areas public transport, addressing the core issues of noise, reliability and convenience as a part of their exam essays. This resulted in a first prototype conducting its maiden voyage during 2007, the monorail had at this point only run museum services on special days for close to 10 years, leaving the area even more under-served.

Small problems relating to the Climate Control System and emergency brakes delayed full deployment of the new train until the middle of 2009. While slow to gain initial popularity and traction due to the bad history of the Y2 during its final years in mainstay service, by 2011 it was classed as a success and several more units were ordered. Today it has become a popular service, With it being used frequently both by tourists for the sights of many historical landmarks and the coastline, and also for regular commuting.

In 2010 the representatives of the public transit system in several Donnish cities expressed an interest in the Type 10, and after initial testing on Nauchrten State Railway units, purchased 10 End Cars for further trials and testing in service . The positive results of those tests lead to subsequent orders from Donnish side over the coming years, and today the Type 10 serves 5 larger donnish towns.
