The U1 is an rail rapid transit line of the underground system in Newstead. The line is 22.6 km long and has 30 stations. It runs from Spandaw through the city centre to Teltaw, crossing the city from west to east. The U1 is the oldest line of the network, first opening for some public tests in June 1948 before beginning regular passenger service as line A on 3 December 1949. The line is known by its present name since 1960.

Between Raadshous and Universitÿt, it runs alongside the U3. It crosses the U2 at Centralstatië and Universitÿt, and the U4 at Centralstatië.

History

A line crossing the city centre from northeast to northwest was included in some of the very first plans for an underground railway in Newstead in the 1900s. In 1940, one of the lines that was planned went from Willemsplat to the northwest of the city centre to Þurchstrate in Rÿkshall (Rixhall), with later plans extending this line to the new developments in Spandaw in the west and in Teltaw in the east. A section from Willemsplat to Zoologisker Garden was chosen as the first section to be built, with construction starting in 1942 and being mostly finished by the spring of 1948. On 11 June 1948, the first train ran from Willemsplat, carrying the mayor of Newstead alongside some journalists, with limited passenger service starting on the section the next day. However, it took until 3 December 1949 for regular passenger service to begin. By 1958, line A had reached its present termini on both ends.

The U1 has 30 stations.

Operation

As most of the Underground, the U1 has 24/7 operation. However, the capacity is lower off-peak due to changes in headways and train length.

Between 00:30 and 04:30, trains operate every 30 minutes. Mondays to Saturdays, trains operate every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 06:00, followed by operations every 5 minutes from 06:00 to 19:00. On weekends, the 10 minute headways instead last until 08:00. Between 19:00 and 22:30, trains operate every 10 minutes and between 22:30 and 00:30, they operate every 15 minutes. As it operates alongside the U3 between Raadshous and Universitÿt, the frequency is effectively doubled on this section of the line.

The U1 has small depots at both ends of the line, though it is primarily served by the depots A (Zoo) and B (Central).
