Kitai, officially the Province of Kitai is one of the 15 Tayichian territorial subdivisions of the highest order, covering 17,801 square kilometers (6,873 sq mi), the fifth smallest. It has a population of 3.2 million, the ninth overall.

Yamaguchi is the capital and largest city, while other large cities include Fukuyama, Shimokita, Chikawaga and Arito, while the southernmost regions of the province fall within the borders of the Idaina Metropolitan Area and the Taīga-Kaidō Megalopolis. Kitai borders Fachi and Teikai to the west, Wanagazi to the north, Kitagasi to the east, as well as the Idaina Metropolitan District and Samui to the south. The province covers the upper and middle parts of the Taīga River, and has historically been dependant on heavy industry which led to its major economic decline in the late 20th century, one of the major reasons why it has a lower gdp per capita than the national average.
