The Vinzeric Republic (Emmotovto Vinzere), or Vinzere, is a sovereign state in Cardia. It borders Arylon, Lavaria, and Erytheria. It has a population of X million people, split between the dominant Vinzeric people and the Comric minority. The culture of these two groups is strongly intertwined, and Vinzere is often considered to be the only mainland Foranic country. The capital and largest city is Castrufe, an ancient city and one of the world's oldest continually inhabited settlements. Vinzere is famous for a long tradition of luxury crafts, a scenic alpine landscape, and its abundance of ancient and medieval structures.
The region of Vinzere was originally divided into several tribes known as Trifors, and was first united by the Erytherian empire in classical antiquity. The region would become a breadbasket for the empire, and was a strategically important frontier for the protection of the Erytherian homeland. Under the empire, Vinzere became an important trade hub for merchants as far as Xeria, and became a gateway for eastern goods to enter Cardia either directly from eastern merchants, or as a gateway between Erytheria and the rest of the continent. When the Erytherian empire collapsed, Vinzere became a refuge and a rump state, maintaining aspects of Erytherian culture, government, and identity, although local languages became dominant in government, with Vinzeric being valued over Comric.
The unique Vinzeric republican system, originating from tribal laws and philosophy, was adapted to the imperial administration and bureaucracy. The influence of the military and the republic disrupted the hereditary institutions inherited from Erytheria, and the office of autocrat became an elected executive position to contrast with the senatorial legislature. This system was adapted further in the Early Modern period and the electorate was expanded, which forms the basis of the modern Vinzeric government and its institutions. The historical input of autonomous or semi-autonomous polities such as communes and city-states within the governmental apparatus has led to a devolved system of governance.
