Presidential elections were held in Dionia on 1 August 1995, it was the first presidential election in the country since the Stilian Republic in 1811 and it was the first election under the new constitution.

Incumbent president Stefan Negoitescu announced he would not be seeking re-election and returned to his seat in parliament, his vice-president Valeriu Stanasila became the Republican Front's candidate following a party vote on 30 April. Former Home Secretary Costica Hagi announced his campaign and won the PND's primary against Valeriu Plesu who split from the party and formed the Far-right Asurosceptic Traditional Democrats. At the time Prime Minister Adi Amanar became the party's candidate after winning a five-way primary.

Amanar was seen as the front-runner against the Republicans before a series of allegations against Amanar and his former business dealing caused him to plummet in the polls and was overtaken by Hagi and Plesu. The first round of opinion polls showed that the country was likely to have a second round between Hagi and Stanasila. Amanar resigned as Prime Minister the day of the first leadership debate after a parliamentary investigation showed he had bribed several former government ministers to grant him permission for a housing project. Hagi became the front-runner at the start of July overtaking Stanasila.

Exit polls on the night of the election concluded that Hagi had won a decisive victory and became President the day after in parliament. Stanasila and his supporters conceded victory to Hagi whilst Plesu announced he would be retiring from politics and the Traditional Democrats voted to disband itself the day after Hagi's inauguration.
