Etymology
The common name for the country, Vasdir, is most commonly accepted as deriving from the Luíghnic Fastír. This itself was derived from the !Latin Fascinia, which is believed to be borrowed from the Old Luíghnic Fescorinis. A less accepted view is Vasdir as deriving from the eclipsis of Fastyr, Vastyr, though the usage of Vasdir dates back to the 12th century, and mutational degradation in Vassard only began in the 19th century.
The name Voldir, commonly used by !Germanic nations, is believed to be derived from the Vassard Moirçheer (Motherland), which became conflated with the alternate expression Yn çheer Voir (The Motherland).
The Vassard name for Vasdir is Ellanyn ny h`Astyr, which translated literally means 'Isles of the Evening Star'. This name dates back to the early 3rd century BC, used by the Mindrene scholar Pseudo-Hektor in the form Fiescorne. It refers to the native deity of Vasdir, !name.
