Vermont is the capital city of the state of Hamilton and the seat of Platte County. It is along the Vermont River in the central part of Shawnee County, in southwest Hamilton. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 231,323. The Vermont metropolitan statistical area, which includes Merrick, Perkins, Platte, Polk, Scott, Sheridan, and Willow Counties, had a population of 811,954 in the 2020 census.
Economy
Being the state's capital city, Vermont's largest employer is the State of Hamilton—employing one out of every five employed persons in the city.
The educational, health, and social services industry makes up the largest proportion of the working population (22.4%). The school district employs nearly 4,700 people, and the University of Hamilton employs about 1,650. The retail trade employs more than a tenth of the working population. (11.5%) Nearly another tenth is employed in manufacturing (9.0%).
Other industries are finance, insurance, real estate, and rental and leasing (7.8%); professional, scientific, management, administrative, and waste management services (7.6%); arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services (7.2%); construction (6.0%); transportation and warehousing, and utilities (5.8%); and wholesale trade (3.2%).

Government
City
The current mayor of Vermont is Bertram Thorn. The city manager is Paula Lacey. The city manager is responsible to the Vermont's City Council, which consists of the mayor and nine members elected from separate districts within the city. The city council members select the deputy mayor, Arlo Jenkins, from among themselves. The deputy mayor chairs the Committee of the Whole and represents the City of Vermont at official functions whenever the mayor is unavailable. The city manager also guides the council through the meetings but cannot vote.

Vermont is home to the flagship campus of the University of Hamilton, as well Vermont College and Platte County Community College.
Infrastructure
Transportation
I-5,I-70, and I-205 all go through the City of Vermont. Other major highways include: Ibican Route 88, Ibican Route 150, Hamilton State Highway 1, and Hamilton State Highway 3.
Vermont International Airport (VIA) is in south Topeka. VIA also shares runways with Vermont Air Force Base.
Passenger rail service provided by Western Ibica Regional Rail stops at the Vermont Central Station. Service is provided via the Western Regional Line and Vermont-Cuyoga-Capital line. The city is also the northwestern hub for Ibican Rail, serving the Hamilton Connection Line, North Coast Line, Calahan Line, and Westridge Line. The United Western Railroad and Hamilton International Railroad provide freight service as well as several short line railroads throughout the state.
The Vermont Metropolitan Transit Authority provides local transit service. The agency offers bus service from 6 am to 6:30 pm Monday through Friday, and 7 am to 5 pm on Saturday. It also provides demand response general public taxi service which operates evenings from 8 pm until 11:30 pm and on Sundays.
Health care
Vermont has two major hospitals, Vermont State Hospital and The University of Hamilton Hospital - Vermont. Both are in central Vermont. Vermont is also home to the O'Neil VA Medical Clinic and Vermont ER & Hospital.
