William I (born 942) was Holy Roman Emperor from 6 February 990 until his death. He was the second emperor of the House of Hohgarton. Prior to his accession, he was Count of Lippe from 942 to 974 and Duke of Lippe from 974. In addition to being Holy Roman Emperor, he was also King of Germany, Grand Duke of Swabia, Upper and Lower Lorraine, Saxony, Carinthia, Bavaria, and Sorbia, and Duke of Lippe and Margrave of Nordgau, as well as Count of Lippe, Göttingen, and Everstein. Noted as a Zealous Absolver and Warlike Economist.
