The Yoganian Bloodscale Grouper (Kjerso: Geulden-borgul) is a species of freshwater fish native to Yogania. It is primarily found in the Yoganian Sea around Kjerso, and in some nearby rivers and lakes. It can range from orange to dark red in color. It is the largest species of grouper fish, ranging from 2-5 meters in length and can weigh over 150 kilograms. The name Bloodscale comes from the translation of the Kjerso name geulden-borgul, meaning blood fish. It was given because of the dark red color of it's scales.

Habitat

Bloodscale Groupers are found only along the coasts and in the rivers of Yogania, primarily near Kjerso. It is usually found in shallow waters near algae deposits. It can survive temperatures of up to -25C.

Yoganian Bloodscale Groupers are the largest species of grouper fish. They commonly reach 2 to 5 meters in length and over 100 kilograms in weight. The largest Bloodscale Grouper found was 5,80 meters in height and weighed 298 kilograms.

Diet

Bloodscale groupers are carnivorous. They eat a diet that includes various types of fish, crustaceans, and squid.

Fishing

Bloodscale Groupers are an important commercial fish. According to the Yoganian Statistics Institute (YSI) There were about 11,000 tons of Bloodscale Groupers fished for commercial purposes in 2022. The bulk of the fish are sold to restaurants and grocery store companies. The price for a whole Bloodscale Grouper varies from 150 to 900€ depending on the size.

Food

The Bloodscale Grouper is primarily used for food. It is a very popular fish to eat in Yogania due to it´s availablilty and cheap price, especially in the southern areas where it is fished. Some Bloodscale dishes include:

Bugruldo is a type of fish soup usually made with Bloodscale grouper and shrimp. It consists of a fish broth made with Bloodscale grouper and flavored with a high amount of mild Goltpepper, shrimp, and sometimes potatoes.

Another popular way of eating Bloodscale Grouper is cooking it whole, in the oven or grilled. It is a popular summer meal in Yogania and is a big ticket item of the Yoganian seafood fast-food chain Bucketson's. It is made by cutting open a Bloodscale grouper and cooking it in the oven with butter or oil or grilling it on a barbecue grill. It is usually served with roasted potatoes or made into sandwiches.
