Ilmer Yutrias (born 9 June 1974) is the 7th and current Premier of the Caropsyne Pontanore since 3 March 2020. He is not a newcomer to politics and while it is his first term in the Pontiana, he has been in elected office for over a decade. Prior to his elevation to the Premiership, he served as second and last Speaker of the Cadriana and also held one term in the Euvodorian State Legislature.
Early and Personal Life
Yutrias, a Carthen, was born in the Pontanore State of Euvodora. His father was a respected lawyer while his mother held a position in the State's Civil Directorate. Ilmer's parents noticed his strong academic talent early on in his life and spared nothing to get him into the best educational institutes in the state. He would go on to pursue his doctorate in political science. It was during his studies that he would meet and marry his wife of twenty-five years, Lidria. Ilmer received his doctorate in 1996 and proceed to be a professor of political science at the University. Over the next decade, he and his wife would give birth to three daughters.
Early Political Career
In 2008, he decided to run for a seat in the Euvodorian State Legislature as an independent candidate. Ilmer would make use of his tenure in the legislature to help teach his doctorate students the complex relationships between the Central Government, the States, and where both intersects with the common citizen. He encouraged them to engage in philosophical debates over the system of today and where it could go tomorrow. Sensing an opportunity to better serve the Pontanore, he ran and won a seat in the Cadriana in 2012 where he was in quick succession elected to be its Speaker due in part for his record of reason and flare for well-versed rhetoric with a hint of nationalism. Yutrias's speakership was focused on ensuring the body's parity with the Pontiana, though this was never achieved.
Yutrias' name as a potential leader of the Pontanore grew in political circles during the final months of the Cadriana's existance when both he and Marias Gatto, Chairman of the Pontiana Executive Committee, released an expansive report which laid down recommendations on wide-ranging reforms of the Fostana: the upper, appointed chamber of Parliament which for over a millenia had been dominated by aged aristocratic landowners and religious leaders. Amongst their proposals, they called for a new Fostana comprised of notable citizens from the political, academic, and bureaucratic spheres of society, appointed by the Pontiana. Throughout the centuries, the Fostana had the sole power to select its members by a majority internal vote without interfence of the lower house nor the monarchy of old. The desire to reform the Fostana goes back to the early days of Miria Seranoda's Premiership. She did plan for a meritocratic body similar the Fostana of today, but neither she nor her successors attempted out of need for keeping the Fostana on-side in the ongoing effort to combat Dormondism.
Almas Josc became Premier in March 2019 and dissolved the Cadriana three months later. By September, he announced on State Television that he not serve for more than one year, prompting the Pontiana Executive Committee to set elections to occur in early 2020. Several of his closest colleagues from the defunct Cadriana and his prior tenure in the Euvodorian State Legislature encouraged him to run for the Pontiana and become Premier in the process. They all committed to helping him raise vital funds and establish the largest field campaign since 2000 to catapult him into office.
Campaign for Premier
Yutrias declared his independent candidacy in October 2019 besides his wife, their daughters, and closest supporters in his home constituency in Polmona. He was hoping to emulate the same success Miria Seranoda had in coming to power in 2000 without the assistance of any major party but quickly embraced the media's portrayal of him as the "New Left" candidate. Seeing a window of opportunity he gave a keynote speech in the Euvodorian city of Zaramela proclaiming the rebirth of the left, promising voters a return of a powerful left-wing government under his leadership. He stated that he would implement long-desired Fostana reforms, economic consolidation, and the reorganization of Pontanore industry. Elections were held on 3 March 2020 and both he and other New Left candidates won 65% of the Pontiana's 840 seats.
