The republic was shaped by the West Besmenian economic crisis which had lasted since 1963. During this time, the Zamastanian Ziapet was the official currency. Many cities like Melmingia or St. Butz used a local currency too. With the currency treaty of the Besmenian Union, which was signed on March 20, 1967, the East Besmenian Spero became on April 1 the official currency.

The Besmenian Republic was considered as one of the poorest country of Nortua during its existence. This gave the republic the nickname "New Old East Besmenia", based on the fact that East Besmenia also had economic problems in the first years of its existence.
