Taraest is home to several ecoregions owing to its climate and geography. The major biogeographical regions can be found along the coasts of the Hemetrian sea, the flat interior of the country, the lush forests of the west, and the alpine regions of the North. The country maintains 22 {{wp|national park}}s, 15 {{wp|Animal sanctuary|Animal sanctuaries}}, 34 {{wp|Nature reserve}}s, and 100 other protected areas. The largest protected area is that of the Domogled National Park at 151,260 acres. Forest covers about 56% of Taraest. Following major forest loss during the 60's and 70's, the country has returned numerous forested areas to previous levels.
Taraest is a country with distinct {{wp|Fauna}}. It has some 47,000 known species, although the number is likely higher. They include at least 619 {{wp|Bird}} species, 455 {{wp|Mammal}} species, 421 {{wp|Amphibian}} species, and 504 {{wp|Reptile}} species, of which 152 are {{wp|endemism|endemic}} to Taraest. Some native birds include the {{wp|Alpine swift}}, {{wp|Common chaffinch}}, {{wp|Common loon}}, {{wp|Flamingo}}, the {{wp|Golden eagle}}, the {{wp|Great bustard}}, the {{wp|Great white pelican}}, the {{wp|Great spotted cuckoo}}, {{wp|Long-tailed duck}} among numerous {{wp|Tit_(bird)|tits}} and other birds. Some native Mammals include the {{wp|Eurasian_lynx|Auressian Lynx}}, {{wp|Eurasian_brown_bear|Brown bear}}, {{wp|Chamois}}, {{wp|Greater horseshoe bat}}, {{wp|Greater noctule bat}}, {{wp|Wolf|Grey Wolf}}, {{wp|Eurasian_otter|Otter}}, {{wp|Red deer}}, {{wp|Red fox}}, {{wp|Saiga antelope}}, {{wp|Stoat}}, {{wp|Danube_Delta_horse|Taraesti Horse}}, {{wp|Wild boar|Teren Boar}}. Numerous species of {{wp|Dolphin}}s, {{wp|Whale}}s including the {{wp|Humpback whale}} exist off the coast, along with {{wp|Porpoise}}s. Reptiles species include the {{wp|European_green_lizard|Auressian green lizard}}, {{wp|European pond turtle|Auressian pond turtle}}, {{wp|Vipera berus|common Auressian adder}}, {{wp|Eryx_jaculus|Javelin Sand Boa}}, {{wp|Kotschy%27s_gecko|Kelmans Gecko}}, and the {{wp|Sheltopusik|Taraesti Glass Lizard}}. Dozens of {{wp|Frog}}s, {{wp|Salamander}}s, and {{wp|Newt}}s including the {{wp|Smooth newt}} exist in the country. {{wp|Sturgeon}}s are common sights off the Taraesti coasts. {{wp|Lamphrey}}s are commonly found on waterways and lakes. The {{wp|Austropotamobius bihariensis|Taraestan Lobster}} is endemic to Taraest although it was wrongly named as a {{wp|Lobster}} instead it is in fact a {{wp|Clayfish}}.
Taraesti law protects 2,000 species throughout the country, with penalties on the keeping, hunting, and selling of animal species. Some species previously protected have lost {{wp|animal rigts|rights}} in recent years, such as the Red Fox which since 2014 has been made lawful to hunt with a license while the animal had been protected from all hunting since 2000. {{wp|Whaling}} has been a controversial topic in the country, and although officially banned, illegal whaling is conducted mostly unopposed due to a lack of enforcement by authorities.
The {{wp|national animal}} of Taraest is the {{wp|Red fox}}, who is a common sight in the countries lush forests and grasslands. The {{wp|Danube_Delta_horse|Taraesti Horse}} is featured in the national coat of arms and has been the subject of numerous attempts to officially denote as the national animal. Although no other official animals exist, the {{wp|Great white pelican}}, {{wp|Eurasian_brown_bear|Brown bear}}, and the {{wp|Eurasian_lynx|Auressian Lynx}} have been recognized as important organisms in Taraest. The Taraestan Armed forces consist of land, air, and naval forces led by a Commander-in-chief under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, and by the president as the Supreme Commander during wartime. The Armed Forces consist of approximately 125,000 personnel, 92,000 for land, 15,000 for air, 8,000 for naval forces, and 10,000 in other fields. Total defense spending in 2019 accounted for 1% of total GDP, or approximately $8.093 billion.

Taraestan armies traditionally relied on a small corp of professional soldiers and a large proportion of conscripts. Conscription was frozen in 1993, but remains inside the constitution, and can be turned into law with just a simple majority in Chamber. Taraestan conscripts between 18 and 45 years, served for a full year before being placed in the reserves for another 5 years. The army is fully professional.

The Taraestan Armed Forces rely on equipment locally produced, but has increasingly favored foreign equipment. In 2002 Taraest bought 12 {{wp|https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_F/A-18_Hornet|F/A-98 Osprey}} (locally known as the L/A-98) from [[Albrennia]], buying another 16 in 2006. Taraestan has increasingly bought equipment from Albrennia in recent years. Taraest maintains limited foreign exportation of locally produced equipment, and its exportation is strictly controlled.

Taraestan soldiers have deployed abroad in peacekeeping operations, and the country is a strong provider of troops for international missions. Taraestan constitutionally dissallows the use of {{wp|Chemical weapon}}s, {{wp|Nuclear weapon}}s, and {{wp|Biological weapon}}s

The Popular Movement moved in a period of nationalization, nationalizing the railways and state petroleum, which created TaraOil. The outlawing of Conscription in 1993 garnered great popular support, and Taraest sought closer economical ties with its neighbors, as the armed forces were fully professionalised and reduced in number.
