Angvar[a] (Angvarian: Ongvotar [ˈɒːŋˌβɒtɑːʕ] ( listen); Nemedian: Eisenheim [ˌɔɪzɛːnˈhɔɪm̩] ( listen)), officially the Imperial State of the Crown of Angvar[b], is a transcontinental sovereign state comprising the whole mainland of the Cimmerian continent and most of eastern Hyboria with northern Seria as well as numerous islands in the Atlantean and Lemurian oceans and various overseas territories and dependencies. At 44,889,573 km2 (17,331,961 square miles), or three times the size of the continent itself, Angvar is the largest country in the world by area, encircling one-sixth of Earth's inhabitable landmass and extending across twelve time zones. Bounded to the north by the Borelian Sea, to the south by the Obrisian Sea, to the west by the Maulland Sea and to the east by the Kippon Sea, it borders Drakonia and Ostenia to the west; Sylvania and Avernia to the southwest; Obrisia, Berbania, Ishavan and the Zandish Raj to the south; and Seria to the east, while sharing maritime boundaries with the North Sea Realm and Kippon to the far east, respectively. Via its overseas territories, it borders the Anxi-Fuzhi Union, Kongli, Kaozhi, Lianjian and Zhengxiang by way of the International Legation Zones along the eastern coast of Seria; Baqet, Lozi-Vulu, Kikuvu and the Hazirid Boqorate in Maurica; and Zankorra Berria, Pregonia and New Tilgard in Upper Merunia. The country consists of a total of one hundred and sixty-nine governorates (or gaue): one hundred thirty-four on the mainland and thirty-five being overseas. The westernmost and easternmost governorates on the mainland are Neuweißeheldenburg and Vladivoyna, respectively, while the northernmost point overall is in the unincorporated external territory of Karak Khvatîk-Land in Borelia and the southernmost being Los Island in the Auralian Ocean. In addition, there are three associated and protected states, namely the Infernian viceroyalty of Gaietia in Auralia[c], the Grand Duchy of Totenheim and the Duchy of Neugründen[d]. Angvar is the second-largest country in the world in terms of population, with a population exceeding 1.15 billion people, 40.81% of which are Angvarians by ethnicity. Mordegard is the country's capital and largest city as well as a worldwide cultural and economic centre, harboring a metropolitan area population of 220.8 residents, followed by other major cities as Sankt-Nimuesburg, Valenborg, Drestholm, Balzhed, Núrndorf, Skarbolg, Altbruck, Hexentreffen, Lestatshafen and Mordehelm.
Since prehistoric times, anthropophagic cave-dwelling peoples, referred to as Wendol in classical and medieval texts, have been known to inhabit Cimmeria before the arrival of the Ungols, a people of hitherto obscure origins that migrated from northeastern Seria to Hyborian Cimmeria after crossing the Udels approximately 22,300 years BCE. The Iron Horde, a confederacy of predominantly-Ungolic clans that gave Angvar its name according to the 14th-century text Legenda Obscura, displaced the Wendol inhabitants of Cisudelia and established themselves in the region, giving rise to chiefdoms that flourished from between 8100 and 4400 BCE and may have even survived the decline of ancient Hyborian civilization by the Neolithic period. Since late antiquity, the region became a culturally-diverse key centre of eastern Hyboric culture and trade with distant civilizations as far as Seria and Zand, and was attested by Archaic Argosians that have settled its southern Lapetan coastline in the 8th–6th centuries. The Aurean Empire conquered and annexed parts of the region in 39-37 BCE, ensuring the acculturation of most of the Ungols and forming the client kingdom of Tervania after the defeat of the Iron Horde in 13 BCE. The withdrawal of Aurean imperial military authority in the region encouraged the influx of non-Aurean peoples and with it, a comeback of the Iron Horde as rulers of the breakaway Tervanian state, reformed as Great Tervania, in 404 CE, following which the Ungols, having roughly handled the onset of the Wendol incursions into Hyboria, emerged as a recognizable group as they were tens of thousands of years ago. With the fall of Great Tervania, internecine disputes between war chiefs brought the Iron Horde again to disunity and later disintegration into petty chiefdoms in 630 CE.
By the 5th century CE, various kingdoms proliferated throughout Hyborian Cimmeria, succeeding and/or displacing earlier chiefdoms. Keanuism was introduced to the region in the 9th century with the conversion of the Ungol kings to Cathericism. A less-significant Ungol clan, led by the semi-legendary witch-queen Grimhilde, emerged in the Mordel basin and consolidated the other minor clans to form the Duchy of Angvar. Under the influence of Nemedians migrating from Central Hyboria, the Duchy grew to become an important trading centre.
